THE DINING ROOM CHANDELIER
The chandelier is the most important light fixture in any dining room. If you have a traditional dining space that is separate from the kitchen or the living room, then the chandelier can act as a focal point for the room. Even in modern home layouts, where the kitchen and dining room are adjoined, the chandelier plays an important role in defining the dining area and adding elegance and style to the space. Finding the right chandelier can be challenging, which is why our team is here to help every step of the way.
CHOOSING A CHANDELIER
You might have an idea of what style of chandelier you want, such as something modern or something more traditional. Whichever it is, we can show you a number of options that fit your vision and your budget. Before you start shopping, however, it’s essential that you measure your dining room so that you can size your chandelier properly. You don’t want a light that’s too large or too small for the space, as that will impact how much light the room has and how balanced the final lighting design feels.
In a traditional dining room with walls and a doorway, you can measure the length and width of the room to get the total square footage. From there, we can help you find a chandelier that is the right size and provides the right amount of light. If you have an open floor plan, you can tape off the area you want to light and measure from those points to get your square footage. You can also take the size and shape of your dining table into account. If you have a long, narrow table, then you may want a linear chandelier so it matches the table. For a round dining table, you can go with a round chandelier.
INSTALLING YOUR CHANDELIER
Once you’ve chosen a chandelier, the next step will be to install it. This is often best left to a licensed electrician, and we can help you find the right professional for the job. As for the placement of your new hanging fixture, you’ll want to make sure that it’s centered above the table. You’ll want to measure the height of your ceiling to determine how high or low to hang the chandelier, but it’s best to leave at least 30 to 36 inches of space between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier. This will keep the light from obstructing people’s view when they’re seated at the table and keep guests from bumping into the fixture when they stand up.
If you have a tall dining room ceiling, such as 9 feet or higher, you can raise the chandelier 3 inches for every foot of height. This will help center the fixture between the table and the top of the room, and spread more light to the entire space.
